Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

February 14, 2010

Dear Parishioners,

The Gospel reading of today is from the Gospel of Luke and it is called 'the sermon on the plain' and it parallels Matthew's 'sermon on the mount.' Luke in his Gospel gives importance to the poor. He begins with "blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours." It differs from Matthew's account, "blessed are the poor in Spirit." Poverty is an evil and it is not God's way of punishing some people. The world has enough resources for every human being to have the necessities of life and to live in dignity. God will not be able to remove poverty unless the world cooperates with him. Poverty and hunger will be eradicated when people are able to share, treat every other person with dignity and bring about justice.

We will be entering the season of Lent on Ash Wednesday, February 17. During the Lenten season, there will be a special Mass at St. Denis on every Wednesday evening at 6:00 pm, followed by a soup supper at the Parish Center.

On February 23 at 7:00 pm Fr. David Pettingill will give a talk at St. Denis Parish Center. Being the year of the priest he will talk on priesthood from the point of view of the priesthood that every baptized Christian shares with Christ.

Yours Sincerely,
Fr. Jose Shaji, Pastor
